Isaac's Proportion Post

Here are some definitions for some words

RATIO- Comparing different parts of a whole to each other. For example, for every 4 oranges you have, 6 apples I have. Or 4:6

RATE- Comparing two quantities measured in different units. An example of this could be every 100g of salsa you buy, you pay a  $0.81

PROPORTION- A relationship that says that two ratios or two rates are equal. an example of this would be, I can run 12 laps around the oval in 8 minutes. try to figure out what time I get if I run 1 lap.

1. 5 hours to travel 360 kilometers is about _____km/h.

First you need a word ratio of hours and km. Then on km you need 360, and on hours 5. Then for hour you need 1, but you don't know what the km is. to get it, you need to multipie five by 72. So since you have to it to one side, you have to do it to the other. 1x72=71. In one hour you can go 72 km.

2.Emma saves 28 cents of every dollar that she earns. Emma earned $75 last week. How much money did Emma save last week?

The word ratio for this question is dollar and money earned. Then you put 1 dollar on the top and 28 on the bottom. Then you put 75 dollars on the top, but you don't know what the bottom number is. To get it, you have to multiply 1 by 28. THat =28. So then 78/.28=268. 268 cents equals 2.68. So Emma saved 2.68 last week.

One way that 3/4 is= to 12/16 is that if you multiply 3x4, it equals 12. The same if you multiply 4x4, it equals 16.
Another way to figure it out is to divide 12/16 and 3/4. If you divide both of them and it equals the same answer, they are equivelant. 12/16 and 3/4 both = 0.75.
The last answer to figure out if there equivelant or not is to cross multiply. 3 and 12 on top and 4 and 16 on the bottom. then multiply 3 by 16, and 4 by 12. When you multiply both of them, they both equal 48.

For the jailer who stole 100 dollars, and the 3 billion fraud, the terms are outrageously unfair. This does not seem fair because, if you used the ratio for 100 dollars for 15 years of prison, the people who stole the 3 billion dollars are going to be in jail for a bit longer than a lifetime. If I was the judge, the business that had the 3 billion dollar fraude shouldve gotten a life sentence in prison, or should've had to pay everyones money back. The homeless guy however, should've only had a 4 month term in jail and should've gone to probation for stealing.
